What is Electropolishing
Electropolishing, sometimes described as the reverse of electroplating, is an electrochemical finishing process that removes a microscopic layer of material from a metal surface. During the process, metal parts are immersed in a controlled electrolyte solution while electrical current dissolves a thin layer of metal from the surface.
By preferentially removing material from microscopic surface peaks, electropolishing gradually smooths and brightens the metal surface while preserving the overall geometry of the part.
The result is a cleaner, more uniform surface with improved corrosion resistance, enhanced appearance, and better overall material performance.

Typical Electropolishing Process
Electropolishing systems typically follow a three-stage finishing workflow:
1. Pre-Cleaning
Parts are cleaned to remove oils, machining residues, and other contaminants that may interfere with the electropolishing reaction. Ultrasonic cleaning is commonly used to prepare parts for processing.
2. Electropolishing
Parts are submerged in a temperature-controlled electrolyte bath while controlled DC current removes a microscopic layer of material from the surface.
3. Post-Cleaning and Rinsing
After polishing, parts are rinsed and dried to remove residual electrolyte and ensure a clean, corrosion-resistant surface. Ultrasonic cleaning and rinsing may again be used during this step.
