Before

Raw CNC-machined titanium medical component before automated batch finishing, showing the original machined surface prior to matte surface refinement.

After

Titanium medical components after automated batch finishing with a uniform matte surface finish comparable to manual hand blasting.

Objective

A medical device manufacturer in the St. Louis, Missouri region needed to replace a labor-intensive hand blasting operation on titanium medical components with an automated batch finishing process that produced a uniform matte surface while maintaining critical dimensions.

Solution

Bel Air evaluated automated finishing processes for titanium medical components using centrifugal disc and vibratory finishing technologies. The objective was to replace a labor-intensive hand blasting operation while producing a uniform matte surface and maintaining critical dimensions.

The CNC-machined titanium components required a consistent surface finish with minimal thread damage and dimensional change. Two automated finishing processes were evaluated to determine the most effective approach for reducing manual labor while achieving the desired surface appearance.

Following processing, the parts were ultrasonically cleaned and dried before evaluation. The resulting processes produced a uniform matte surface comparable to hand blasting while giving the customer multiple automated finishing options for production.
