Before

Close-up of slotted stainless-steel medical tube before edge deburring

After

Precision deburred stainless-steel tube with smooth edge and open bore

Objective

Automate the edge-break and deburring process for slotted 304 stainless-steel medical tubes without reducing the internal diameter. A 0.0195” plug gauge must pass freely after tumbling.

Equipment TypeCentrifugal Barrel Finisher/Harperizer

Solution

Bel Air developed a centrifugal barrel finishing/harperizing process to deburr and break the edges of slotted 304 stainless-steel medical tubes while maintaining the inner diameter.

The process used precision ceramic media—a fine-grain, aluminum-oxide–based media that delivers a smooth finish with controlled metal removal. Its medium wear rate and balanced cutting action allowed consistent edge refinement without closing the 0.0195″ I.D.

This method eliminated manual deburring and produced a clean, uniform edge finish that met the plug-gage tolerance requirement for precision medical components.
