Objective

An orthopedic medical device manufacturer in the Seattle, WA region needed to improve the surface finish of long Grade 4 titanium bone plates by reducing visible machining lines and creating a more uniform semi-polished appearance.

IndustryMedical/Pharmaceutical
Part DescriptionLong Bone Plates
Fabrication MethodCNC-Machined
MaterialGrade 4 Titanium
Process TechnologyDeburring, Semi-Polishing
Equipment TypeCentrifugal Disc Finisher, Centrifugal Barrel Finisher/Harperizer

Solution

Bel Air evaluated centrifugal finishing options for long Grade 4 titanium bone plates used in medical device applications.

The CNC-machined plates required a more uniform semi-polished surface with reduced machining lines while preserving the part geometry and features along the length of each plate.

Centrifugal disc finishing and centrifugal barrel finishing were tested as alternative approaches for controlled surface refinement. The evaluation reduced visible machining lines and improved the overall surface finish, as shown by the before-and-after surface measurement results.

The testing demonstrated potential finishing options for refining long titanium medical components while supporting a more consistent production-ready appearance.
