Objective

Bel Air Finishing was tasked with producing a high-luster shine on 3D-printed SLA acrylic dental retainers while preserving the integrity of embedded stainless steel wires. The goal is to achieve a polished, molded-like finish that meets dental industry standards for durability and aesthetic appeal.

Solution

In 2007, an international medical implant manufacturer partnered with Bel Air Finishing, integrating three Centrifugal Disc Finishers into their CNC cells to streamline the deburring and cleaning processes for titanium bone screws. By integrating this equipment directly into the cells, lead times were reduced from several weeks to three days, minimizing handling and enhancing production efficiency. Cellular processing also lowered scrap rates by limiting batch sizes, resulting in less waste when testing failed. This successful setup has since expanded, with the manufacturer now operating dozens of these work cells worldwide, from the Caribbean and Central America to Asia, continually adding Bel Air equipment for new product lines.
