Objective
A manufacturer needed to automate the deburring of 9-toothed powdered metal nickel steel gears while maintaining the matched fit between the gear and housing. The goal was to eliminate hand deburring, increase throughput, and improve consistency across parts in each set.
| Industry | Automotive |
| Part Description | 9-Toothed Gear |
| Material | Powered Metal Nickel Steel |
| Fabrication Method | Deburring |
| Process Technology | Cast/Molded, CNC Machined |
| Equipment Type | Centrifugal Disc Finisher |
Solution
Bel Air recommended a Centrifugal Disc Finishing process to automate burr removal from powdered metal nickel steel gears and housings. These components had fine burrs along the gear teeth and housing edges from the machining and forming process. A carefully selected media and compound combination was used to cleanly deburr internal and external features without affecting gear geometry or fit. The result was a smoother finish, consistent part quality, and reduced labor requirements compared to manual deburring.
