Before

CNC-machined 4140 steel weak side thumb safety before automated deburring and surface preparation.

After

4140 steel weak side thumb safety after centrifugal disc finishing with deburred edges and a uniform surface finish.

Objective

A firearms components manufacturer in the Austin, TX needed a repeatable finishing process to deburr and blend CNC-machined aluminum weak side thumb safety components while reducing manual finishing.

Part Description Weak Side Thumb Safety (V2 & V3)
Fabrication MethodCNC Machined
MaterialAluminum
Process TechnologyDeburring, Burnishing, Wet Grinding
Equipment TypeCentrifugal Disc Finisher

Solution

Bel Air developed an automated finishing process for CNC-machined aluminum weak side thumb safeties using a Centrifugal Disc Finisher. The objective was to remove burrs, blend machined surfaces, and produce a consistent finish while reducing manual hand finishing.

The centrifugal disc finishing process removed burrs from intricate features and blended sharp edges while maintaining critical part geometry. Different media, compounds, and process parameters were evaluated to determine the most effective finishing method for the application.

The finished process produced consistent surface preparation across the thumb safeties, improving repeatability and supporting higher-volume production.
