3D Titanium Dental Abutments - As Printed

3D Titanium Dental Abutments - Post Processed

Objective

Bel Air Finishing was tasked with developing multiple post-processing options for titanium dental abutments produced via a combination of 3D printing (DMLS/SLM) and milling using the Imagine Technology Imill SX-500 system. The goal was to achieve a uniform surface finish, remove build lines, and streamline polishing for clinical readiness.

Part DescriptionDental Abutments
MaterialTitanium, Ti  64Al 4v
3D Printer TechnologyDMLS/SLM  Print and Mill
Process TypePolish Surface, Remove Build
Equipment TypeHigh Energy (Centrifugal Disc Finisher, Centrifugal Barrel Finisher/Harperizer), Multiple Technologies

Solution

Bel Air implemented a high-energy finishing approach using centrifugal disc and barrel finishing systems to polish and smooth titanium dental abutments. These processes eliminated build lines, refined surface texture, and ensured a clean, implant-ready finish while preserving tight tolerances. The final process options reduced manual labor, enabled scalable production, and preserved the biocompatibility of the Ti 64Al 4v alloy.
