Objective
A customer needed to smooth and polish dental retainers and braces made from Lazertek Cobalt-Chrome (CoCr) powder without altering the fit or geometry of the parts. The goal was to eliminate manual grinding and replace it with a consistent, automated solution that preserved detail while improving surface finish.
| Industry | Dental |
| Part Description | Dental Frameworks |
| Material | Cobalt Chrome |
| 3D Printer Technology | Binder Jet, DMLS/SLM, EBM/EBAM |
| Process Type | Smooth & Polish Surface |
| Equipment Type | Industrial 3D Print Smoother |
Solution
Bel Air implemented a wet slurry blasting process using the Industrial 3D Print Smoother to uniformly smooth the surface of Binder Jet and DMLS-produced cobalt chrome frameworks. This technique effectively removed build texture and reduced Ra/Sa values without compromising part geometry. While full mirror polish was not required, the process delivered a refined, semi-gloss finish suitable for dental use—eliminating manual grinding and improving overall consistency.
