Objective
Improve the final polishing process for cast acrylic dental retainers by replacing low-energy barrel tumbling with a controlled, automated method that enhances surface clarity while protecting the embedded stainless-steel wire. The goal was to achieve a high-gloss, scratch-free acrylic finish without bending, scuffing, or exposing the orthodontic wire framework.

Solution
The customer was polishing acrylic dental retainers using a centrifugal barrel system, but the process was too aggressive and limited to a two-dimensional finishing action. This created a risk of damaging the stainless-steel wire molded into each acrylic retainer — a critical feature that cannot be bent or exposed during finishing.
Bel Air re-engineered the workflow using a Centrifugal Disc Finisher, which delivers a faster, more controlled, three-dimensional polishing motion ideal for delicate acrylic components. The disc finisher allows media to flow uniformly across the retainer’s surfaces while minimizing impact on the embedded wire, producing a gentler yet more efficient final polish than the customer’s previous method.
After testing multiple media and compound combinations, Bel Air developed a multi-step polishing process that:
- Smooths molded acrylic surfaces without haze, swirl marks, or flattening
- Prevents wire exposure, bending, or abrasion during finishing
- Produces a clear, uniform, high-gloss finish across all contours
- Reduces cycle time compared to centrifugal barrel tumbling
- Provides a repeatable, scalable process for high-volume dental production
Bel Air supplied three fully finished sample retainers, each demonstrating a different polish level, allowing the customer to select the finish that best aligns with their quality standards.
The result is a controlled, production-ready acrylic polishing process that preserves wire integrity and delivers a consistent, cosmetic-grade finish — fully solving the limitations of the previous barrel-based approach.
