After

Carbide end mill after drag-spindle edge preparation with a more consistent cutting-edge radius.

Objective

A cutting tool manufacturer in the Northeast Ohio region needed to automate the edge preparation of carbide cutter inserts. The goal was to replace manual honing methods with a repeatable process capable of producing consistent edge radii, improved tool performance, and higher production efficiency.

Solution

Bel Air developed an edge preparation process for carbide end mills using a drag finishing system. The process was designed to create a consistent cutting-edge radius while maintaining the tool geometry.

The carbide end mills required controlled edge preparation to refine the cutting edge and create a more consistent edge radius before production use. The goal was to improve edge consistency without changing the tool’s overall geometry.

Using a drag finisher, the end mills were processed to refine the cutting edge and produce a more uniform edge radius across each tool. The resulting process helped maintain consistent edge preparation while preserving the geometry needed for woodworking applications.
