Objective

A cutting tool manufacturer in the Northeast Ohio region needed to automate the edge preparation of carbide cutter inserts. The goal was to replace manual honing methods with a repeatable process capable of producing consistent edge radii, improved tool performance, and higher production efficiency.

Solution

Bel Air developed an automated edge-preparation process for carbide cutter inserts using the AutoHone™ Robotic Honing & Polishing Machine. The process was designed to create a consistent hone along the cutting edge while eliminating the variability associated with manual edge preparation.

The customer was looking for a fully automated honing solution capable of producing repeatable edge conditions across production batches. Using a controlled reverse drag finishing (stream finishing) process, the cutter inserts are moved through the media at controlled speeds to create a uniform edge radius while maintaining critical tool geometry.

Unlike manual honing methods, the automated drag finishing process produces consistent edge preparation across all cutting edges and insert geometries. The controlled process helps reduce edge chipping, improve repeatability, and create more predictable cutting-edge conditions from insert to insert.

The result was a repeatable, production-ready edge preparation process that reduced manual labor while supporting more consistent tool performance and tool life.
