Objective
An additive manufacturing partner serving the footwear industry in the Los Angeles, CA region sought to evaluate post-processing technologies for a 3D printed foam shoe produced on a Bambu H2D FDM printer. The goal was to improve surface consistency, reduce visible layer lines and surface roughness, and create a smoother feel while maintaining the shoe’s overall geometry and functional features.

Solution
Bel Air evaluated multiple post-processing technologies for smoothing a 3D printed TPU shoe, including a Vibratory Disc Finisher and the Industrial 3D Print Smoother. The goal was to improve surface consistency and create a smoother feel while preserving the lightweight foamed structure of the printed part.
Using a vibratory finishing process with dry plastic finishing media, Bel Air was able to reduce visible surface roughness and create a smoother, more uniform surface without introducing water that could affect the printed part. The process refined the peaks and valleys created during printing while maintaining the shoe’s overall geometry and flexibility.
The evaluation demonstrated how post-processing can improve the appearance and feel of consumer 3D printed products. By selecting the appropriate finishing technology, manufacturers can achieve a more refined, production-ready surface finish for footwear and other additively manufactured applications.
