Objective
Replace manual edge-breaking and grinding labor on Stage 3 turbine blades by developing a controlled, repeatable deburring process that removes burrs from machining and casting while maintaining critical airfoil geometry and surface integrity.

Solution
Bel Air evaluated automated mass finishing methods to replace hand deburring on the CNC-machined and cast Inconel Stage 3 turbine blade. The focus was to remove burrs from the leading and trailing edges and establish a controlled break edge while preserving the blade’s aerodynamic geometry.
Two finishing systems were assessed:
- Centrifugal Disc Finisher: Provided high-energy media contact capable of removing machining burrs quickly and uniformly across the airfoil surfaces.
- Vibratory Finisher: Offered a gentler, more controlled action suited for refining edge radii and stabilizing surface consistency across part lots.
Both methods demonstrated the ability to reduce manual labor, improve process repeatability, and maintain dimensional integrity. Final system selection can be tailored based on production rate, edge condition requirements, and downstream finishing needs.
