Objective
A precision aerospace manufacturer in the Southwest Michigan region needed a repeatable deburring process for CNC-machined 440C stainless steel sleeve components before heat treatment. The goal was to remove machining burrs, achieve the required edge breaks per print, and improve consistency compared to manual deburring.
| Industry | Aerospace/Defense, Machine Shop Applications |
| Part Description | Sleeve |
| Fabrication Method | CNC Machined, Swiss Screw Machined |
| Material | Steel Alloy 440C per AMS-5630 |
| Process Type | Deburring |
| Equipment Type | Harperizer, Centrifugal Disc Finisher |
Solution
Bel Air evaluated high-energy finishing technologies for deburring CNC-machined 440C stainless steel aerospace sleeves, including centrifugal barrel finishing (Harperizer) and centrifugal disc finishing. The focus was on removing burrs from machined openings and other critical edges before heat treatment.
The parts required consistent edge breaks and burr removal without damaging critical features. Bel Air developed a controlled finishing process that removed burrs from internal and external surfaces while maintaining part detail and overall geometry.
The final process produced clean, repeatable edge conditions ready for heat treatment. The process reduced manual deburring, improved consistency from part to part, and provided a more efficient finishing solution.
