Ultrafiltration, often called U/F, is a membrane-based wastewater treatment process used to separate water from larger contaminants in water-based solutions, emulsions, and suspensions. Under pressure, water passes through permeable membrane elements while larger materials, including emulsified oils, fine solids, and other suspended contaminants, are retained and concentrated.

The clarified permeate can be collected for reuse or discharge when it meets the requirements of the application and applicable regulations, while the concentrated waste is managed separately.
