Edge preparation (or edge honing) is the controlled refinement of a cutting tool’s edge to balance sharpness, strength, and coating adhesion. Even microscopic burrs or grinding marks can lead to premature tool wear, chipping, or inconsistent cutting forces.

By developing a precisely honed edge radius optimized for each tool geometry and material, manufacturers can:

  • Eliminate microfractures and burrs created during tool grinding
  • Improve coating adhesion during PVD or CVD deposition
  • Increase edge stability and wear resistance under load
  • Extend tool life and achieve predictable, repeatable cutting performance

Edge preparation is critical for carbide and HSS tools used in demanding production environments—especially when machining stainless steel, titanium, Inconel, and other hard alloys where coating performance and edge geometry directly affect tool life.
