Objective
Medical scalpels required controlled edge breaking, burr removal, and micro-scratch reduction while preserving tight dimensional tolerances (±0.005”). The goal was to create a smooth, uniform surface without altering the precision-cut profile produced by laser/wire fabrication.
| Part Description | Medical Scalpel |
| Industry | Medical/Pharmaceutical |
| Fabrication Method | Laser/Wire Cut |
| Material | 410 Stainless Steel |
| Process Type | Deburring, Polishing |
| Equipment Type | Centrifugal Barrel Finisher/Harperizer, Centrifugal Disc Finisher |
Solution
Bel Air developed an automated mass-finishing process to remove burrs, break sharp edges, and reduce micro-scratches on laser-cut 410 stainless steel scalpels — all while holding the customer’s ±0.005” dimensional tolerance.
Using either centrifugal barrel finishing (harperizer) or centrifugal disc finishing, Bel Air established a controlled, repeatable process that:
- Removes laser/wire-cut burrs without rounding critical geometry
- Breaks edges uniformly across every part in the batch
- Reduces micro-scratches and improves surface smoothness
- Maintains tight dimensional control required for medical instruments
- Replaces manual deburring with a consistent, production-ready workflow
This automated approach improves process capability, reduces operator variability, and produces cleaner, safer handling edges suitable for downstream cleaning, assembly, and sterilization.
