Before

Raw CNC-machined 17-4 stainless steel tibia tooling plates showing tooling marks and sharp edges

After

eburred tibia tooling plate after mass finishing with tooling marks removed and edges smoothed

Objective

To develop a batch-process solution for deburring CNC-machined tibia tooling plates and broach inserter components. The goal was to remove tooling marks and sharp edges while maintaining dimensional accuracy and ensuring consistent, repeatable results across multiple part geometries.

Solution

Bel Air developed a controlled mass-finishing workflow to remove CNC machining marks and safely deburr the 17-4 stainless steel and Inconel tibia tooling plates. The process focused on delivering a uniform, matte surface suitable for downstream assembly and handling, while protecting all critical features and tolerances.

Because the customer needed a repeatable batch method for multiple part styles, Bel Air evaluated both centrifugal disc finishing and vibratory finishing. Both methods provided the necessary edge radius control and surface refinement, allowing the customer to process plates and broach inserters together in an efficient production workflow.

This automated approach eliminated hand-deburring steps, improved consistency, and produced clean, burr-free surfaces with reliable repeatability from lot to lot.
