The July 2025 Tool Honing Seminar at Bel Air Finishing provided an in-depth, hands-on look into the evolving world of cutting tool honing and polishing. Held at our Technology Center in Rhode Island, the seminar explored how advanced mass-finishing techniques can dramatically extend tool life, improve surface finish, and boost machining efficiency.
Led by Vice President Steve Alviti Jr., the session covered the post-grind enhancement cycle—edge prep, coating prep, polishing, and inspection—supported by real-world case studies, process strategies, and live demonstrations. Bel Air President Steve Alviti Sr. reinforced key takeaways with hands-on lab demos that brought concepts into focus.
Highlights included a case study showing tool life gains of up to 1500% through proper edge prep, along with solutions for common PVD coating challenges (such as microscopic droplets) and the value of coating polishing. Attendees were shown comparisons of traditional and advanced honing methods—including slurry/vapor honing, drag finishing, and robotic automation—and reviewed best practices for media selection and surface metrology to ensure consistent, high-quality results.
