The March 2025 Tool Honing Seminar at Bel Air Finishing brought together a group of industry professionals—both in-person and online—to explore the latest advancements in cutting tool manufacturing. Held at our Technology Center in Rhode Island, the event focused on how effective edge preparation, PVD coating, and polishing can significantly improve tool life, surface finishes, and machining speeds for in-house cutting tools.
Steve Alviti Jr., Vice President & Sales Manager of Bel Air, emphasized the importance of maintaining tool geometries during honing to ensure optimal performance and consistency—especially for manufacturers using cutter grinders to produce their own tools. The seminar highlighted how precision honing not only extends tool life but also enhances cutting performance and reduces overall production costs.
Participants learned about a range of honing technologies such as vapor honing, drag finishing, and automation, with a focus on their advantages over traditional methods like brush honing. The sessions included practical tips on selecting the right machines, honing media, and leveraging advanced metrology for consistent results.
