Objective

Bel Air Finishing was tasked with developing a polishing process for FDM-printed ABS cylinders featuring through-holes. The goal was to achieve a high-gloss, molded-like surface finish while also giving the customer the ability to produce a semi-gloss or matte alternative using the same overall workflow.

Solution

Bel Air used a vibratory finishing process to refine the surface of the ABS cylinders. The parts, originally printed with visible FDM layer lines, were processed in a series of vibratory steps to progressively smooth and polish the surface. By adjusting the media type and cycle duration, Bel Air was able to offer the customer two distinct finish options:

  • A high-gloss finish with improved reflectivity for premium presentation
  • A semi-gloss or matte finish for a more understated, functional aesthetic

This flexible approach enabled consistent results while preserving part geometry—ideal for applications where visual quality, feel, or downstream coating compatibility are important.
