Process with Clear Coat

Process with Black Coat

Process with Color Coat

Objective
Formlabs provided an SLA white resin shave handle to evaluate finishing and coating options. The objective was to demonstrate how automated post-processing can replace manual smoothing and achieve consistent surface quality, while also exploring different coating methods to enhance both aesthetics and durability.
| Industry | Consumer Goods |
| Part Description | Handle |
| Material | White Resin |
| 3D Printer Technology | SLA, SLS |
| Process Type | De-Powder, Dye or Coat |
| Equipment Type | Industrial 3D Print Smoother, Coating |
Solution
Bel Air developed a multi-step finishing process to refine the SLA-printed resin handle and prepare it for coating.
- Smoothing: The part was first processed in Bel Air’s Industrial 3D Print Smoother to eliminate build lines and achieve a uniform surface.
- Coating: The handle was then finished with different coating options applied via <a href=”/3d-post-processing/equipment/3d-centrifugal-spin-coater/”>spin coating</a>—clear, black, and color finishes—to compare optical clarity, gloss, and overall surface quality.
This approach eliminated hand polishing, ensured consistent results across geometries, and provided scalable finishing methods for production runs of consumer goods and personal care products.
