Binder jet–printed L605 specimens before post-processing, showing raw surface

Before

Surface metrology scan of binder jet–printed L605 specimen before finishing, showing Ra: 450.50 µin

After

Surface metrology scan of processed L605 specimen, showing reduced roughness with Ra: 10.070 µin

Objective

To evaluate post-processing options for L605 alloy specimens produced on a binder jet metal 3D printer. The customer partnered with Bel Air to determine achievable surface finishes for future production parts and reference materials.

Solution

Bel Air processed a set of flat binder jet–printed L605 specimens to showcase various surface finish options. The parts were treated using a combination of wet blasting with the Industrial 3D Print Smoother and high-energy finishing methods to remove powder residue and reduce surface roughness. Each specimen was finished to a different degree and documented with surface metrology analysis. The results were compiled into a keychain-style sample set, providing the customer with a tactile reference of what’s achievable through Bel Air’s tailored post-processing workflows for binder jet parts.

If you are unsure what equipment and media you require to achieve your desired surface finish, then send us your part, and we will evaluate it and provide you with a metrology report.

To explore various achievable finishes, you can also request a comparative keychain sample showcasing a range of surface textures and polish levels.
