Objective

To develop multiple post-processing options for polishing 3D binder jet–printed orthodontic brackets made from 17-4 stainless steel. The goal was to achieve a smooth, uniform finish suitable for patient-facing dental components, while maintaining precision features and biocompatibility.

Solution

Bel Air evaluated a range of polishing strategies for Binder Jet–printed 17-4 stainless steel orthodontic brackets. Depending on the final finish requirements and geometry of the part, either centrifugal disc finishing, centrifugal barrel finishing, or electropolishing was used to achieve the desired surface quality. Each method was tested to remove powder residue, smooth surfaces, and enhance shine while preserving critical dimensions. These flexible process options allow dental manufacturers to balance throughput, precision, and cosmetic standards in post-processing workflows for binder jet metal orthodontics.
